Institutions

Studying US institutions requires knowing something about the federal government, with its system of checks and balances, and the compromises that creating it involved, something about federalism, i.e., the structured relations between the federated states among themselves, and between the states and the central (or national or federal) government. These two are, of course, intimately related; the document that spells out the overall functioning of the system is the Constitution.
